Valkyrie Games is Palmerston North's local hub for Magic: The Gathering players. We host regular Magic events for casual and competitive players, including Commander, Draft, Prereleases, Standard, and other special events throughout the year.

Do you run Commander events?

Yes.

Commander is one of the most popular formats played at Valkyrie Games. We run regular Commander events on Monday, Friday and Saturday and also have casual Commander players in store throughout the week.

Can beginners play Commander?

Absolutely.

Commander is one of the most social and beginner-friendly ways to play Magic. Our community is welcoming to new players, and many regulars are happy to help explain rules and game mechanics.

I've never played Magic before. Can I learn at Valkyrie Games?

Yes.

We regularly help new players learn Magic: The Gathering. Our staff can explain the basics, recommend products for beginners, and help connect you with friendly players who are happy to teach the game.

What Magic formats do you support?

We regularly support a variety of formats, including:

Do you run Friday Night Magic (FNM)?

Yes.

We regularly host Friday Night Magic events and other organised play opportunities throughout the week. Check our event calendar for the latest schedule and formats. We run Commander and a Draft every Friday

Do you run Magic Prereleases?

Yes.

Every major Magic: The Gathering set release is typically celebrated with Prerelease events where players can experience the new cards before the official release date. We host the biggest pre releases in Palmerston North, with players travelling to come and check out the events. 

Prereleases are suitable for both experienced players and newcomers.

What is a Magic Prerelease?

A Prerelease is a special event held before a new Magic set is released.

Players receive a Prerelease Pack containing booster packs and build a deck from the cards they open. It's one of the most popular ways to experience a new set.

Do I need my own cards to attend an event?

Not always.

Draft and Prerelease events provide the cards needed to participate. Commander, Standard, Pioneer, and Modern events generally require you to bring your own deck.
