Dungeons & Dragons FAQ – Palmerston North

Where can I play Dungeons & Dragons in Palmerston North?

Valkyrie Games is Palmerston North's leading venues for Dungeons & Dragons and tabletop roleplaying games.

We regularly host D&D sessions, community events, beginner-friendly games, and our popular Open Group program, which allows players to join adventures without committing to a long-term campaign.

What is Dungeons & Dragons?

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a cooperative tabletop roleplaying game where players create characters and work together to explore fantasy worlds, overcome challenges, battle monsters, and tell memorable stories.

Unlike board games, there is no winner or loser. Players work together to create an adventure guided by a Dungeon Master (DM).

I've never played Dungeons & Dragons before. Can I join?

Absolutely.

Many of our players started with no experience at all. New players are welcome, and our community is happy to help teach the rules and answer questions. We have specific tables to help new players learn the game.

You don't need to know the rules before your first game.

What do I need to start playing D&D?

For your first game, usually very little.

Many beginner games provide everything you need to get started, including character sheets and guidance from experienced players.

As you become more involved, you may wish to purchase:

  • Dice

  • Rulebooks

  • Miniatures

  • Character journals

  • Maps and accessories

What is the Open Group?

The Open Group is Valkyrie Games' ongoing public Dungeons & Dragons program. Running for more than 10 years and teaching hundreds of people to play Dungeons and Dragons in the Manawatu.

Players can join adventures, explore shared settings, meet other players, and take part in an evolving story without needing to commit to a weekly campaign.

It's one of the easiest ways for new players to get involved in tabletop roleplaying.

Can I join if I miss sessions?

Yes.

The Open Group format is specifically designed to make it easier for players to participate when their schedule allows.

This makes it ideal for students, shift workers, busy parents, and anyone unable to commit to a fixed weekly campaign.

What age is Dungeons & Dragons suitable for?

Dungeons & Dragons can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages.

Many younger players enjoy the game with family members, while teenagers and adults often participate in community campaigns and organised events.

Specific events may have age recommendations depending on content and complexity.

Do I need to create my own character?

Not necessarily.

Many beginner-friendly games provide pre-generated characters, allowing new players to start playing immediately. Open Group provides generated characters for all of the tables if required.

As you become more familiar with the game, you can create your own unique characters and stories.

What books do I need?

The most common starting point is the Player's Handbook.

However, many players begin without owning any books and borrow resources while learning the game.

Our staff can help recommend the best products based on your interests and experience level.

Do you sell Dungeons & Dragons books?

Yes.

We stock a variety of Dungeons & Dragons products including:

  • Core Rulebooks

  • Adventure Campaigns

  • Dice Sets

  • Miniatures

  • Dungeon Master Resources

  • Character Accessories

  • Terrain and Maps

Availability varies as new products are released.

Do you sell Pathfinder products?

Yes.

In addition to Dungeons & Dragons, we support Pathfinder and other tabletop roleplaying games.

What is a Dungeon Master?

A Dungeon Master (DM) is the player who runs the game world, controls non-player characters, describes locations, and guides the adventure.

Think of the Dungeon Master as a combination storyteller, referee, and world builder.

How long does a D&D game take?

Most sessions last between 3 and 5 hours, although some games may be shorter or longer.

Campaigns can range from a single evening adventure to stories that continue for months or even years.

Can I become a Dungeon Master?

Absolutely.

Many experienced DMs started as players. We stock books, adventures, tools, and resources that can help you learn how to run your own games.

What other roleplaying games do you support?

In addition to Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder, we regularly support a variety of tabletop roleplaying games depending on community interest.
